Well Alan, I’m delighted a few potted words have been of help. Soooo, words of wisdom coming up then Don’t ‘molly-coddle’ the tree, wire when new growth is young and pliable, or you will end up with straight lengths. Don’t repot for the sake of it, the EH can along with the Japanese version ‘sulk’ considerably if you catch it wrong. Above all else, NEVER panic, help is never far away from you. I recommend you consider joining an oline Bonsai forum and pitch in if you get stuck. There will always be someone to help. If not Alan, you know where I am.

A wonderful tree!
For me the first left branch would have to go as it competes visually with the trunk, either by restraining it by pruning until the trunk thickens or creating dead wood. Keep it as is though until other branches have grown enough to fill in the back (wich seems to be it’s main purpose right now).
I would keep the “bow branch”, the concept being a graceful elderly lady who once was a girl with bows in her hair. I would love to create a “homologue” in a flowering species!

Thank you. Quite large, pot is 37′ long , a Walsall Ceramics. Gaps vary between trees. If you would like to let me see an image of your own group planting I could perhaps make a suggestion. Making a group planting does not restrict you to just one way. There are many alternatives; for example large trees to front and smaller to rear, laid it such a way as to give the illusion of full prospective. Leaving an empty space to one side also comes over as pleasing.

Thanks Don; really appreciate your time in leaving a reply I suppose like anything Bonsai based there comes a time when something simply does not work any longer and hence I decided on the change. Need to sort out a pot change though; this current one certainly doesn’t work any longer. Oh well, Swindon show on the 19th Feb fingers crossed. I need a few now.

Hi Carole; available from most garden centres or online. Make certain you get one with an attached cord which gives flexibility. Take no notice of the chart that comes with it; just simply understand what readings mean in terms of your Bonsai .

Big improvement already! Needs a bit more radical change to branch placement to fill out the foliage area, but I think you have thought about this already.
